What is EFT?

Emotional Freedom Technique, also known as EFT or tapping is a mind-body method and healing treatment which falls within the category of energy psychology.

EFT is the love child of Eastern medicine and Western psychology and others have described is as acupuncture but without the needles! The gentle method is unique in that we are tapping on the body’s meridian lines, also known as Chi, whilst talking about your current concerns bothering your life in the present. This is somatic type of therapy and a great tool for self-regulation, which is highly recommended for people suffering from trauma and PTSD.

By tapping on the body’s acupressure points, we safely explore the emotions behind your physical and chronic health issues, anxiety, depression, any blocks or limiting beliefs. When we tap, we are shifting disturbed energy in the body. This release is linked to acceptance, and can have a profound shift in our bodies, affecting our emotional health subsequently.

EFT has been found to be effective in pain and symptom management, as well as working effectively with anxiety and stress related conditions. As it is a safe, gentle yet effective therapy for addressing earlier traumas, impressive results have been achieved using EFT for PTSD and other trauma specific conditions.

Meta-analyses show EFT to have a large treatment effect for anxiety, depression, and PTSD. For anxiety, (Clond, 2016), for depression (Nelms & Castel, 2016) and for PTSD, (Sebastian & Nelms, 2016). In addition, NICE or National Institute for Care Excellence, has issued their recommendation of the use of EFT towards the treatment of PTSD (2018).

So, in other words, EFT has an ability to help us confront our unresolved emotions and triggers, and allow us to safely feel, release, heal and successively move on.

What is compassionate inquiry?

Compassionate Inquiry is a second modality that informs my practice. Compassionate Inquiry is a somatic psychotherapeutic approach which allows for emotions to be expressed that have once been suppressed.

It is an expressive therapy.

This allows for you as a client to recognise the limiting beliefs that you may have carried and internalised since childhood.

We work to transform those beliefs through awareness and through the connection to myself as the practitioner and yourself, the client, in the present moment.

Through this discovery you as a client can move in to a new possibility of being.

A.H. Almaas — 'Only when compassion is present will people allow themselves to see the truth.'

The CI approach is for:

  • People who are tired of repeating the same patterns, over and over again.

  • For those who are ready and willing to make changes to their outlook of life.

  • It is for those that want to learn to re-connect to their bodies and emotional states.

  • The approach is for people who want to live in the present moment, learn to take responsbility and live more consciously.

What i can help you with

Stress, anxiety and uncertainty

If you are struggling with anxiety from all the uncertainty around you which prevents you from progressing in your life, EFT can help you. We live in an unsettling and distressing world full of social, medical and political unrest. Existing stress or worry may be exacerbated by our global situation and contribute to our emotional and mental health. EFT can help treat different manifestations of anxiety; from limiting beliefs, to panic attacks, palpitations, to specific issues such as phobias, public speaking fears, dizziness and vertigo.

PTSD

Traumatic events such as adverse childhood experiences, domestic violence and abuse and events such as near-death experiences can have a substantial impact on how we live our lives in the moment. In EFT we work to clear out and collapse the negative memories and events contributing to your current mental and physical health state, working somatically with the body through tapping and breathing consciously can heal your mind and body.

physical and chronic health issues

If you are struggling with a physical health diagnosis or an ongoing chronic pain or health issue which is having an impact on your daily life, and you feel like you have tried treatments that haven’t helped you, EFT can be the alternative route to healing. We would explore emotional causes of the pain and limiting beliefs that may be contributing to the ongoing issues.

addictions

The route to addiction always starts as a coping mechanism to escape different forms of pain. Addictions are therefore protective in their nature, but lead to complicated consequences that may impact mental health, family life and relationships, work and so on. Being trauma-informed in the ways I work, we can safely explore what the addiction does for you, and simultaneously work to clear out the feelings, emotions, events as well as the resistance associated with the addictions using EFT tapping.

depression

Whether you have a diagnosis of depression, or struggling with low-moods, low energy, thoughts of hurting yourself on a seasonal or a constant basis we can work together. EFT can help us go back to root causes of events taking place in life that have had a profound effect on our sense of self in the world. This exploration can help you shift your relational situation to others, such as your significant others such as your partner, friends and family.

confidence and self-esteem

Feeling confident and having high self-esteem are feelings about ourselves that we aspire to have in order to succeed in different parts and areas of our lives. Feelings of shame and guilt can have a profound effect in limiting our sense of belief in ourselves. We may have internalised unhelpful beliefs about ourselves in the external world, such as other people’s perception of ourselves or from community, or our caregivers. EFT can help to rearrange beliefs and reframe memories that have contributed to a limiting perception of ourselves in the world.
